volunteers
Hawke’s Bay Rowing can only exist with the support of parent and supporter volunteers. Dedicated volunteers manage and implement the operational requirements required to support our rowers perform on the water. Our expectation is that every parent or supporter will take on a role at one or more events throughout the season. The responsibilities are many and varied. Some tasks require very little of your time, while others may be much more time consuming. Volunteer opportunities cover a range of activities both administrative and hands on. There are many reasons to volunteer. You may want to develop new skills, meet new people, help others but the most important reason may simply be to support and encourage our rowers.
Broadly, your help covers the four F’s
The Hawke’s Bay Rowing volunteer community is recognised as a cohesive, supportive and importantly a fun group of supporters. Your support is critical to running camps and regattas. We need skills to help deliver facilities for our rowers at camps and regattas. For example, we will need parents who can help in the kitchen, with the boats, tents, BBQs, driving vans, first aid skills etc. All help is appreciated and members of the committee as well as experience parents will teach you on the job.
Assistance can be required in the following specialist areas:

Supporters & Parents
As well as supporting Hawke’s Bay Rowing as a volunteer, we also require your support to help the crew’s row to the best of their ability. To help crews give their best, form their own identity and mature as a crew, please consider the following:
PICK UP & DROP OFFS
Please be timely when picking up and dropping off rower's for training and travel as we do not want kids being left alone at night.
We have a restricted parking area at the club which does get congested. Other sporting groups use the same carpark from time to time. Please be courteous of each other as you arrive and leave the club especially down the driveway. Look for pedestrians walking down the driveway. Keep speed down at all times.
Please speak with the Coach, Coaching Coordinator or Club Captain if you have any concerns what so ever.
- Encourage their independence as much as possible. Better that they make their own mistakes and learn for themselves. Improvement often comes from losing not winning.
- Resist the temptation to get involved in crew matters. Speak to the Coach or Coaching Coordinator if you have any concerns.
- Recognise rowing for what it is – a physically and mentally demanding sport requiring dedication.
- Avoid getting involved in the discussions and taking sides. The intense nature of the sport can give rise to conflict with the crew. This is to be expected and needs to be worked out by the crew and coach. It is all part of the experience. It is very easy to form opinions however it is not in the interests of the crew for supporters to become part of the additional pressures.
- Support any actions taken by the coach such as crew changes. Crew changes are made with a lot of prior thought and invariably many factors have to be considered. Frequently factors outside of the control of individual rowers, such as the regatta programme, the form and improvement of other rowers, the availability of boats and entry restrictions by regatta organisers can influence selection decisions.
