CLUB INFO

Club Info

Founded in 1876, Hawke's Bay Rowing Club is nestled along the Clive River in Farndon Road, Clive. We welcome men and women of all skill levels, offering both sweep and sculling options.

We're not just any rowing club; we have a rich history of winning NZ titles. Our athletes and coaches have even made it onto the international stage, representing New Zealand in world competitions. Starting from grassroots in Hawke's Bay, we've nurtured numerous distinguished Olympians and national representatives.

As members of the club, you'll have the opportunity to compete in regattas all over New Zealand, carrying on our legacy of excellence.

We are all volunteers

It is important to note that every single person involved with Hawke's Bay Rowing Club is a volunteer. We are very fortunate to have such great people dedicating huge amounts of their spare time to our Club and to developing the athletes.

Over Summer, coaches can be putting in 15+ hours of training time plus all of the behind the scenes administration for regatta entries etc and some are Committee members on top of that.

What we require of you as a parent

As a Volunteer

Hawke's Bay Rowing thrives thanks to the support of our dedicated parent and supporter volunteers.

We expect every parent or supporter to chip in during at least one event throughout the season, helping our rowers excel on the water. Roles vary, from quick tasks to more time-intensive responsibilities, spanning both admin and hands-on activities. Whether you're looking to gain new skills, make new friends, or simply back our rowers, volunteering has plenty to offer.

In essence, your help focuses on the Four F's:

  • Food: Prepping meals for camps and regattas
  • Fundraising: Identifying funding opportunities or raising money directly
  • Ferrying: Transporting rowers to training sessions, camps, and regattas
  • Fun: Keeping our culture of fun alive while supporting the team

Our volunteer community is known for being cohesive, supportive, and, most importantly, fun. Your skills are vital for organising successful camps and regattas. From kitchen aid to boat maintenance and driving vans, there's something for everyone, and experienced members will guide you along the way.

Specialised help is also needed in:

  • Boat Maintenance: Both rowing skiffs and coaching boats
  • Towing: Ideal for parents comfortable with an HT licence or towing large trailers
  • Fundraising: Includes sponsorship and grants

Your support makes a world of difference, and we're grateful for each helping hand.

As a Parent

Supporting Hawke's Bay Rowing goes beyond volunteering; it's also about helping the crews perform at their best. Here are some tips to consider:

  • Encourage independence: Let rowers make mistakes and learn, as growth often stems from setbacks.
  • Keep a distance from crew matters: If concerns arise, direct them to the Coach or Coaching Coordinator.
  • Understand the sport: Rowing is a tough, demanding sport both physically and mentally.
  • Avoid taking sides: The sport can get intense, and any conflicts should be resolved by the crew and coach, not supporters.
  • Back the coach's decisions: Crew changes are well-considered, factoring in many variables like regatta programmes and boat availability.

Pick-Up & Drop-Offs

Punctuality is key for training and travel pick-ups and drop-offs to ensure no one is left alone, especially at night. Parking at the club is limited and can get busy, as other sporting groups also use the car park. Please be considerate of others, watch out for pedestrians, and keep your speed low, particularly on the driveway.

Please speak with the Coaching Coordinator, Club Captain or committee member if you have any concerns what so ever.
